Is There Such Thing As Just 'Bamboo Yarn?'
Due to yarn being a textile of small fibers, there is no wholly 'bamboo' yarn. This is because bamboo is a natural grass with a thickness similar to most woods. In order for bamboo to become a fiber, it must be broken down and mixed with chemicals, before being spun into thread. Therefore, bamboo yarn will technically always have some sort of synthetic nature to it because it requires chemicals for formation. This includes all types of bamboo fabrics, such as sheets, towels, socks, or other clothing items.
Bamboo Rayon Explained
Bamboo rayon is the process of manufacturing a fiber from wood pulp. This happens through a cellulose immersion, which breaks down the pulp, and turns it into a viscous solution. Oftentimes this is used as an overall term for most types of bamboo synthetic fibers. It is a luxurious texture. General types of rayon include: Viscose, Lyocell, and Modal.
Bamboo Viscose Explained
Bamboo viscose is a term can be interchanged with rayon. This is due to it being a rayon process that uses cauastic cellulose such as xanthate. Viscose is the most common type of rayon manufacturing. It feels no different than the fibers from bamboo rayon.
Bamboo Lyocell Explained
Bamboo lyocell goes through the same process as other bamboo rayon fibers, but using non-toxic solutions instead. Additionally, these solvents are recycled along with the water that is used, to be reused over and over. It's known for feeling silky soft to the touch, moreso than rayon.
Bamboo Tencel Explained
Bamboo Tencel is a trademarked brand produced by Lenzig AG, known for its eco-friendly lyocell process. Their plants are taken from controlled areas, rather than felling them. Then, their solvent goes directly to a water treatment facility, rather turning into runoff and polluting the local environment. Essentially, Tencel is a highly sustainable lyocell process, compared to its counterparts, made by one company. Its long fibers make this particularly smooth and incredibly soft.
Bamboo Linen Explained
Bamboo linen manufacturing process is mostly the same as the rayon process, instead using biological enzymes for breaking down the plant pulp, rather than chemical substances. This is more complex and less efficient to make. The texture feels more coarse, but is more durable, and more natural.
